Clogged Drain & Sewer Cleaning · Waterloo
Drain Cleaning and Sewer Line Service in Waterloo
A drain that backs up twice has a reason. Clearing it is the easy part. Finding out why it clogged is what stops the third call.
Drain calls in Waterloo split by age of house and by who lives in it. Older homes have old pipe. Student rentals have too many people on one line. Newer homes have builder shortcuts. The tool that clears the blockage is the same in all three; what happens next is not.
Where the drain is blocked, and what that tells you
- One fixture slow, the rest fine. A local clog — hair and soap in a bathroom drain, grease in a kitchen line, a toy in a toilet. Cleared at the fixture or the trap.
- Several fixtures on one floor slow. A branch line is partly blocked, usually where it meets the stack.
- Toilet gurgles when the shower drains, or the basement floor drain backs up. The main drain under the basement floor or the lateral to the street is the problem. Everything above it is fine; there is just nowhere for the water to go.
- Backups only in heavy rain. The municipal sewer is surcharging and pushing back up your lateral. That is a backwater valve conversation, not a drain cleaning one.
Old pipe: uptown, Mary-Allen and the older streets
Houses built before the 1960s in Waterloo were drained in cast iron inside and clay tile outside. Cast iron rusts from the inside and the rough surface catches everything. Clay laterals were laid in short sections with joints every couple of feet, and the maple and silver maple roots on the older streets have had decades to find them. A clay lateral with roots clears with a cutting head, fills again in a year or two, and eventually collapses. A camera inspection after the clearing tells you which of those stages you are at, and whether the answer is a yearly clean, a spot repair or a new lateral. We will show you the footage rather than describe it.
Student rentals near the universities
The houses through Northdale and along Columbia, University and Hazel were built for one family and now drain for five or six. Kitchen grease from a lot of cooking is the most common blockage. Wipes, regardless of what the packaging says, are the second. A basement bathroom added later on a drain that was never sized for it is the third. For landlords the useful service is not just the clearing but the camera afterwards and a short written note: what was in the line, where the pipe is worn, and what to tell tenants. A main-line clean before September move-in prevents most of the January calls.
Newer houses: Laurelwood, Columbia Forest, Vista Hills
ABS drains do not rust or catch roots, so blockages here are usually what went down them, or a construction defect: a fitting installed backwards, a section with no slope, or a drywall screw through a line. Those show on a camera and are fixed once. Floor drains in these houses often have a trap primer that has failed, which is why the basement smells of sewer in a dry summer; that is a small fix worth doing while someone is there.
How the line gets cleared
A hand or drum auger for fixture and branch drains. A sectional or drum machine with cutting heads for main lines and laterals. Where grease has coated a long run, hydro-jetting scours the pipe wall rather than punching a hole through the middle of the blockage. The right tool depends on the pipe: aggressive heads in old cast iron can do more harm than good, and the plumber's job is to know the difference. A camera inspection afterward is offered on any main line or lateral job because it turns a guess into a picture.
Backwater valves and the Region's sewer
If your basement takes sewage during storms, the problem is upstream of your house. A backwater valve installed on the main drain closes when the municipal sewer pushes back, protecting the basement. It is a plumbing installation under permit, it needs access for cleaning, and it changes how the rest of the basement plumbing drains, so it has to be planned. The Region of Waterloo and the City of Waterloo publish information on sewer backup prevention and any programs that may apply; check with them directly rather than relying on a contractor's summary of what you might be eligible for.
What is not a drain problem
Clear water on the basement floor with no fixture involved, especially after rain or snowmelt, is groundwater. That is weeping tile, grading or a foundation crack, and it belongs to a waterproofing contractor. A plumber can rule the drains in or out, and will say so.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a camera inspection?
For a single slow sink, no. For a main line or the lateral to the street, yes if it has blocked more than once, if the house is older than the 1960s, or if you are about to buy or renovate. It is the only way to know whether you have a clean pipe, a root problem or a collapsing one.
Why does my toilet gurgle when the shower runs?
Air is being pulled through the toilet trap because the drain downstream is partly blocked or the vent is obstructed. It is an early warning for a main drain problem. Worth a call before it becomes a basement floor drain problem.
Can you clear the drains in a student house between tenants?
Yes, and it is the best time to do it. A main-line clean and camera check in late August, with a written note of the pipe's condition, is standard for landlords near the universities.
